In 2027, standard benefits will still leave significant gaps. For example, long-term custodial care\u2014like help at home, assisted living, or nursing facilities\u2014usually isn\u2019t included, except for very limited skilled nursing or certain home services. And for routine dental, vision, glasses, contacts, or hearing aids, most retirees will need separate coverage, since Medicare only steps in under specific medical situations. Care received abroad, elective cosmetic procedures, over-the-counter items, and even routine foot care are generally excluded, with very few exceptions. That\u2019s why budgeting ahead for these possible expenses (long-term care, dental, vision, hearing, and other out-of-pocket costs) is so important.
