US GLP-1 Coverage Depends on Plan

Navigating GLP-1 coverage in the US can be tricky, especially for those considering these medications for weight management. While many health plans do cover GLP-1 drugs for diabetes or related conditions, access for weight-loss-only prescriptions is much more limited. Coverage depends on the specific plan and formulary, and often comes with requirements like prior authorization and minimum BMI criteria. For those on individual market plans, weight-loss coverage is rare, and even among employer-sponsored plans, about 60% will cover diabetes treatment, but only around 35% extend that to both diabetes and weight loss. When it comes to Medicare, standard coverage still excludes weight-loss-only use, though a current pilot program is making select GLP-1 medications available for $50 per month. State-federal coverage can differ as well, so I always encourage members to carefully review their plan details, stay informed about appeals, and keep an eye on program updates. Supporting my Medicare members in understanding their options is at the heart of what I do.
